The castle Křivoklát belongs to the oldest castles of the Czech Republic. In the first half of the 13th century Wenceslas I. started to build a stone castle on this site. During the reign of Wenceslas´son Přemysl II. Otakar the castle gained an especially great importance. The castle Křivoklát was seriously damaged by fire several times. It became a dreaded prison and its importance sank rapidly. Today we can see here the gorgeous Castle Chapel, the Royal and Chivalric Halls with an exhibition of Gothic paintings and sculptures, the library containing 52.000 volumes, a famous prison and a torture chamber with torture instruments, a monumental Great tower with a collection of hunting trophies and a view of surrounding area. A pleasant walk around the castle walls, the tower Huderka with an open-hearth kitchen and an observatory gallery are waiting for us.
