Terezín was founded as a fortress at the end of 18th century by the Emperor Josef II. The town lies near the confluence Labe with Ohře. The fortifications of Terezín (Main Fortress and Small Fortress), although the modern ones for their perion, gradually became obsolete and fell into disregard.
Only in the recent past Terezín has once entered the world´s public consciousness as a tragic symbol of sufferings of the tens of thousands of innocent people who died here during the Nazi Occupation of our country. Terezín became a transit station on the way to the extermination camps and more than 160.000 people went through it until the end of the occupation (through the Small Fortress 33.000). The town was liberated at night from 8th until 9th May 1945 by the Soviet Army, which passed through Terezín on its way towards Prague.
