City of a thousand spires. A city of myths, tales and legends. The Czech capital is a place where history breathes from every street. It is one of the most beautiful and attractive cities in the world. Prague’s history and monuments are testimony both to its triumphs and glory and to its years of subjugation and suffering. The territory of today’s Prague has been settled for around fifteen centuries. It has been the seat of many kings and emperors who ruled large tracts of Europe from here.

History is still alive in Prague

The monuments in Prague themselves say more about the city’s history and life more than any guide can. The centre of the city with the unique panorama of Prague Castle is a UNESCO heritage site and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. Here you can visit Prague Castle and its surrounding Hradčany quarter, the Old Town, Charles Bridge or the Jewish Quarter. Prague Castle has been used as the seat of the head of state for more than twelve centuries. The New Town and Vyšehrad or Petřín hill are ideal settings for walks.

Monuments in Prague commemorate both triumphs and hardship

As the capital city, however, Prague has also been the scene of Czech losses and suffering. Two of the most recent and most tragic events were the occupation by German troops from 1939 to 1945 and the Soviet occupation in 1968. To this day the two events are commemorated by modest graves and plaques all over the city. But present-day Prague is a dynamic city that breathes freely. The local life is shaped by the hustle and bustle of the age and also by the large number of tourists who come to admire the city’s monuments and atmosphere. And there is a lot to admire. Prague is a treasure trove of art, created by both local artists and by eminent artisans from many countries. Prague’s history and monuments are loved for their singular charm and inimitable atmosphere.
